Find happiness in the beauty of nature with garden design trends for Summer 2022.

We are in the summer season, which has brought some fresh design trends. For most of the year, our design style focuses on the insides of our home. However, summer brings excitement to outdoor living and why shouldn’t this extension of our home get a little love too?

Whether you’re a brand-new homeowner and can’t wait to try your hand at gardening, a green-fingered pro, or even if you don’t have a garden, this blog has style and décor tips on how you can make the most of this year’s hottest summer design trends.

Trend one – Biophilic design

Biophilic design may sound futuristic, but it’s all about being inspired by the beauty of nature and bringing this into your living spaces. This is a great way to build a soft transition between the modern design of your new home, and the natural, airy world.

So how can you achieve this style?

Think of outdoor space as an extension of your home, rather than ‘just a garden’. Comfy seating, throws and cushions, outdoor rugs, and lanterns accentuate the modern home feel, whilst pairing with greenery and plants, or an outdoor living wall provides the perfect balance of a blended space. Mixing strong metals with natural planters also works well within this trend.

Trend two – sustainability

A trend for 2022 that is here to stay is sustainability, where gardens are made to look like nature, rather than overly curated and designed spaces. Think planters of wildflowers that are great for wildlife, natural materials like logs and stones, recycled pots and growing your own fruit and veg.

A top tip is to use water butts to collect rainwater to water your plants and use organic protectants rather than chemicals.

Trend three – natural materials

It is easy to overlook how important textures and materials are in your garden. Too sharp, modern, or glossy and you quickly lose the natural, cosy vibe that is on trend this summer. When trying to achieve a ‘true to nature’ style, think of rough cuts in granite and stone, relaxed pebble edgings, and chunky wooden pergolas to get that rustic feel!

How to bring the outdoors in

We know not everyone has the luxury of outdoor garden space. You may feel like you’re missing out on the fun, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With this year’s trends leaning towards blended indoor-outdoor living, there’s never been a better time to try and bring the outdoors in.

Let’s start with the layout. Re-arranging your furniture to face a feature of your biggest windows or balcony doors gives an airier feel to a space and starts to extend the indoors out. Bring those outdoor textures, such as jute rugs, and natural stones into your décor items to blend the two. We’re obsessed with these gorgeous clay pots from Nkuku.

Plants are your best friend when it comes to bringing the outdoors in. Dotting around some leafy greenery and setting up window box planters filled with colourful wildflowers or your own fruit and veg will make all the difference when it comes to enjoying the summer sun.
